Speculating The Future Workshop

Presented by Niya Friday

Speculating the Future is a collaborative zine-making workshop inspired by speculative fiction writer Octavia Butler. Through drawing, collage, moodboarding, poetry, writing, and other creative practices, participants will be invited to engage with their imaginations and explore possible futures. Each participant will create their own page, which will become part of a larger collaborative zine helping shape archival material that is representative of the people within the triangle.

Zines As Archive Workshop

Presented by NC State University Libraries from The Special Collection Research Center

How do we document and share stories from the past? How and what do we want to document today to share with the future? This beginner-friendly workshop explores how we can use zines to record and reclaim our personal and community histories, because anyone can make a zine, and anyone can be an archivist. In the first 20 minutes, we will define the concepts of archives and zines together, and imagine how zines can be tools for affirming and shaping collective memory. We will spend the rest of the time working on our own zine projects.

Supplies will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring stories, concepts, or materials (photocopies or originals) from their own personal archives and memories to integrate into an 8-page mini zine.
